Is it safe to check e-mail, or do online banking at wifi hotspots, without worrying about hackers?

So if I check my e-mail, online banking, myspace account, etc. at a wifi hot spot, is it likely that a hacker can snatch my passwords out of the air, or is that highly unlikely to happen?

And does it make a difference if it is a ssl encrypted page or non ssl page?

It is safe for ssl encrypted page (i.e.) since it encrypted data. This goes for webmail (for eg yahoo-it encrypt username and password, while content of mails are unencrypted and can be recorded by hacker), banking online (good-since it encrypt all data) etc. Remember to check ssl certificate (to verify the web site) before doing online banking.

I would worry about email (on email client like outlook, thunderbird etc) if it is pop3 & imap & smtp server as those pass unencrypted data under normal circumstances. Though technology exist like TLS, etc to encrypted email date (via pop3,imap,smtp) very few mail server use it.
