Why do some feminists try to change the culture through the law?

It seems to me that modern feminism has no real qualms with women’s legal rights anymore. Their real target seems to be the mindset of men and even other women who don’t view the world through feminist goggles. Some extreme threads of feminism want to reverse the political power roles, as if men being in authoritarian positions were ever the problem (the authoritarian positions themselves were the problem. The terms female and despotic are not mutually exclusive.) How is this at all ‘women’s struggle for equal opportunity?’

But what I really don’t understand is feminists opposed to prostitution and pornography.

They claim that these industries are exploiting women. Granted, some girls are coerced into becoming prostitutes,(which, when you think about it is true for doctors, or any other profession.) but most aren’t, and surly legalization and legitimization of prostitution would be the solution to this.

The idea that pornography ‘eroticizes the domination, humiliation, and coercion of women, and reinforces sexual and cultural attitudes that are complicit in **** and sexual harassment’, while absurd and unfounded in its own right, is no reason to push for legislation to ban it. I don’t believe many of the anti-porn feminist actually believe this. I think they just want to outlaw behavior that they see as giving them, as women, a bad name. This collectivist type of thinking is laughable at best and despicable at worst. You are an individual before you are any ***.

The attempt to ban pornography and prostitution based on these pretenses is no less dishonest and reprehensible as people trying to pass laws against violent video games due to their alleged behavioral affects.

There is no real anti-porn or anti-prostitution movement, there is only an anti-freedom movement. Modern feminism is nearly the antithesis of the original brand of feminism, which pushed for equal rights and liberty. The label seems to have been ********* by disturbingly selfish women into what it is today. And they didn’t even have the decency to change feminism’s name to what they have made it; Fascism.

Thank you.
re:Micheal

You’d be surprised. But even if i hadn’t most *********** (in this country) chose to be ***********. What right has the government to tell them not to?
re:Lilyta

So, basically what your saying is that because these industries present situations that you wouldn’t subject yourself to, no one should be able to make a living doing them?

I could write a whole book on the horrors of coal mining and how damaging it is to the men that do it but does that mean we should outlaw coal mining?
re:Resurrected Yet Another Time

I gotta wonder if you even read my post.

Very well said. You can’t really put it any better than that.

And as to why… well, just like how a little girl cries to daddy if she wants something… feminism cries to daddy government.

Because she’s incapable of getting it done herself. There now must be a law and thought police…. or daddy’s little girl will be sad. Freedom will become a thing of the past at this rate.

  2. Michael Says:

Have you ever heard of a little girl who said she wanted to grow up to be a ********** or a **** star?

  3. yudel Says:

It’s Communism, not Fascism, but they both suck, so no reason to quibble over semantics.

  4. Rebecca W Says:

Well said. I agree with most of what you have said here. And how do we keep this in check? Vote for the right people and make your voices heard the way the feminists do, by writing leters to your representatives and protesting the things you think are wrong.

edit: Hey lylita chick, my son is in Iraq you ungrateful little wench. While you sit here spouting your idiocy, he is there fighting for your right to do so by serving his country. Show some friggin respect! And on top of that, those coal miners who risk death and being buried alive so that you can have the amenities provided by it like electricty deserve some damn respect too. Unless of course you would like to put your money where your mouth is and put your life on the line for others. Bloody cow!

  5. Jeff Murdoch Says:

Agreed. Have you noticed the temperament of the feminists here on GW&S section? They are difficult, hard nosed, and impossible to speak reason to. However, there is a few spots in the feminist movement: not all feminists think alike and not all of them think “pornography objectifies women” or “pornography causes rape,” an unfounded claim if ever there was one.

Some, such as Sallie Tisdale who wrote in the 1992 issue of Harper’s Magazine how pornography fulfilled her sexual life and she has used it from time to time. Also, ACLU president Nadine Strossen has wrote a book defending pornography and she has argued in front of courts defending pornography and prostitution. Alternet has given former **** star Annie Sprinkles room to write columns about legislation protecting street walkers. So there is some signs of hope and maybe we can save the current feminist strand from its road to sexual puritanism and Dworkinism before they begin again to pass stupid anti-porn and anti-sex laws which intrudes into every aspect of our lives.

    To Lilyta,
The only evidence the anti-porn feminist movement has brought up of a **** star getting blackmailed is Linda Lovelace. This woman has changed her story so many times over the years it is laughable that people like you still believe the “blackmail” and “force against her will” nonsense. Her first autobiography she never indicated getting *****. As a matter of fact, she said she enjoyed her time doing the Deep Throat. Then in her second book she said she was ***** against her will. Then in her third autobiography she mentioned getting forced against her will by her first and second husband. Then in 2001, she did another porno shoot and this was years after she said was traumatized by ****. Her story keeps getting richer with each telling…..

  6. Lilyta Says:

only because you men enjoy porn, it doesn’t mean that women weren’t hurt along the way starring the **** videos. men enjoy *** all the times, and they don’t have much sexual attributes on their body, so acting **** is way enjoyable for them and there aren’t much humiliation with showing off men’s **** and *** images, unlike women who’s the opposite way; their sexual attributes all lies on their bodies but less in their desires, thus they’re made as *** objects and **** icon, which most of the times, not within their will as they were either, forced, framed and blackmailed to get attached in starring **** videos.

edit: hah, another selfish thought of sexism! coal mining and going off war to Iraq is still presentable and even, could be prideful. we do have lotsa little boys wanting to be soldiers and we might not have little boys wanting to be coal miners when they grow up, as they also don’t have idea about it but we can see that they love playing around with toys that closely resembles it, such as soil digging toys. pornographic and prostitution involving degradation of women’s identity, like she’s the soulless *** objects who’s good for nothing but ***. just like when men are to work as puncher bags to be punched by people. there are presentable and prideful ways for women to ‘hurt’ themselves in making an appropriate contribution, like to be a housewife where she is commited in keeping the house nicely, get pregnant, give birth and maintain a good family etc. it isn’t a picnic for us women to grow ******* and bleed every months with cramp for the ***** sake of puberty in order to preserve the new life. be a woman if you’d really like to know how painful enough it is.

  7. Resurrected Yet Another Time Says:

was it *culture* for u when it was determined that blacks & women could vote?

    i hope u dont vote

  8. Elaine of Astolat Says:

Yes, feminism (today anyway) is largely about changing society’s views.

70 percent of teenage girls would stay with her boyfriend if he hit her. Is it honestly okay for 70 percent of teenage girls to think that it’s okay for her boyfriend to hit her?

Feminism is not hating on men, it’s trying to convince women to be stronger. Feminism protects women, that’s it.

And then there ARE the legal stuff, like women being drafted. I believe that we ought to be required to sign up for the draft just like men do. That would be a HUGE step forward. But the trouble is, most people are opposed to drafting women.

  9. edith clarke Says:

For someone who supposedly knows what “modern” feminism is all about, and has declared feminists must be fascists, why don’t you know about these groups below? You’re talking about a few feminists from the 1980’s, the second wave of feminism. This is 2009. Have you heard of the third wave of feminism? They’re concerned about sexual slavery and trafficking (of men, women & children), a very different topic:

Here are a number of feminist or feminist-supportive groups *fighting* censorship, fighting for freedom of speech/print, but who do you think they are having to fight?

    -Nat’l Coalition Against Censorship:
-It’s made up of 50 national not-for-profit organizations such as:

    American Association of University Women
    National Council of Jewish Women
    People for the American Way
    Planned Parenthood Federation of America

I think you’ll find anti-porn and anti-prostitution women among the groups like the Eagle Forum and other religiously conservative, politically conservative, ANTI-feminist groups: Eagle Forum: Supreme Court sides with **** on the Web:

  10. Eoghan. Says:

Its creeping communism sponsored by that lovely section of society the neo liberal banking cartel.

Most feminists have no idea what they are passively supporting or where their speech and thought codes come from.

  11. The Great !!Ya I aY!! Says:

I can’t believe some of the answers here.

And guess what? I have actually heard a girl(17 year old) say she wants to be a **** star. Shock horror?

People don’t say such things in their childhood because unsurprisingly, it is not much of an issue for children who don’t know what’s ***. Incidentally, I have never heard a small girl say, “I will have *** later in my life…”
Does that mean she doesn’t have it at all? Some decisions are taken later in your life.

Not many know that there are people who like to earn quicker.

And any ways, prostitution was never the reason for human trafficking, human trafficking is a different subject, I actually believe it will increase if prostitution is illegal-lized.

Feminism always ******. It does discrimination through law by giving fu-cking examples of societal discrimination.

    Pathetic excuses.

Why else do you think they say, “1 in every six women are raped” when apparently it is not at all important to gain equality? Crimes always will happen, that’s no reason to hurt the innocent.

  12. AnGeLiC UnIcOrN Says:

No woman WANTS to become a **********. Men want casual *** and are ready to pay for it, so for women this is the only choice they have when therez nthin else. Of course its exploitation

  13. keypointist Says:

Yes, I very much agree with you. When feminists get power they are often authoritarian and puritanical (see Sweden). Libertarian feminists are as rare as hen’s teeth.
It has been estimated that just 5% of all *********** in the UK are trafficked women. Nevertheless the feminists in our government are deliberately conflating the trafficking problem with prostitution to try to demonize all men who use ***********. They want to paint prostitution as part of the slave trade even though the majority of Britain’s *********** are independent and don’t feel victimized at all.

“The Home Office is preparing an advertising campaign to highlight the connection between prostitution and people trafficking, of which about 4,000 women in Britain’s *** industry are victims”.
So that’s an estimated 4,000 women out of 80,000 *** workers in Britain. That’s just 5% of all ***********!
From the way feminists talk about prostitution you’d be forgiven for thinking that most *********** are trafficked women when in reality 95% of them are not.
I expect that the majority of British people would like to see prostitution legalized, taxed and regulated.

  14. Hyderabad C Says:

MOST girls CHOOSE to be *********** ..

    wow.

  15. Nihontopride Says:

I don’t believe that feminism is wrong, just that a large percentage of feminists defense is much more fascism than it is feminism, luckily there are some that keep there feet on the ground and there heads out of the clouds.

To Michael: No I’ve never heard a little girl say she wanted to be a ********** or a **** star…… or a marine, or a business consultant, or a mayor, or a bounty hunter, or a farmer, or a police officer, or a movie directer, or a music producer, or a therapist, or a cashier, or any thing else they aren’t told about including a feminist for that matter. when I was five years old, I wanted to be a herpetologist and everyone I told thought I liked plants.

Sir Francis Bacon, a 17th Century Alchemist said “Knowledge is power” he also said “Ignorance is bliss” if you truly want to be happy, go put yourself in a coma.

To Lilyta: Not all men enjoy sex, if half a dozen beautiful women drugged me, carried me off, tied me up and ***** me, I would probably get an ******** and climax multiple times, but I would still be traumatized and scared for life. by the way, did you know that it is legally impossible for a woman to **** a man, so if said fabrication did happen, they couldn’t be charged with ****. Why don’t you have them make it apply to woman as well, woman are equal to men, right? Thank God no woman has slapped me or assaulted me since I turned 18 almost a decade ago, otherwise they would be charged with simple battery or had one of there legs broken before they assaulted me further and had them arrested, even though it would be thrown out in court because “she was a woman”. Feminism fights for equality, not superiority, and shouldn’t get freebies for reasons they can or could have helped.

There is nothing wrong with prostitution or pornography, but if you find it offensive, don’t associate with it. and don’t tell me it’s against Gods will either unless you can prove to me without a doubt that Jesus wrote the bible and not his disciples. Only an idiot believes anything he hears just because he was taught (aka brainwashed) into believing it when he was a child.

Long story short: Sir Malbestein is has my support and agree with him almost one hundred percent, and has fairly good reason to feel the way he does about matters I disagree with.
